How piano chords are built

A chord is three or more notes played together. Most chords are stacked from thirds: start on the root, skip a white or black key pattern, and add the next note.

A major chord is a root, a major third (four half steps up) and a perfect fifth (seven half steps up). Lower the third by one half step and it becomes minor — that single key changes the mood from bright to sad.

Seventh chords add a fourth note on top. Inversions rearrange the same notes so a different one is at the bottom, which makes moving between chords smoother.
